My Richmond has grown dramatically in many positive and a few negative ways over the last 40 years. It is a community with a strong diverse economy and increasingly diverse population. It is also a community with 'no there, there.' It is all over the place culturally, socially, geographically, etc. People connect strongly to one or more of these elements, but only a very few have any sense of the whole - - mostly, I believe, because it is 1. not necessary in order for people to have a great life here; and,2. there is no compelling evidence that taking care of the whole is necessary for the region to continue to be healthy economically and continue to grow.
I have come to believe that pushing on the whole will not cause Richmond to be any more than it is.

My Richmond is a city with alot of potential, but full of chiefs and zero indians, everybody wants to lead but nobody wants to follow. With so much opportunity that has past us by and will continue to pass us by until we start thinking regionally and not just our backyard.

My Richmond could be a destination city for the region, state, nation and world with it's abundance of cultural arts, history, diversity, and scenic beauty. Think Charleston, Savannah, St. Augustine, New Orleans.

My Richmond is home. I could make my artwork in any city in the United States, but I choose to do it here.
Its geographically interesting and culturally growing. VCU and a thriving art scene have taken over the blighted Broad Street area and have started to change the feel and look of our downtown.
The sprawl of the outlying areas hurts our city shopping districts, but that is a national issue as well as regional.

My Richmond could still have baseball but we don't. Our city planners often have their heads in the sand... their heads are elsewhere - but I'm keeping this PG.

Imagine Richmond a model of co-housing for the universe. Imagine co-housing as a vehicle for shared wealth. Imagine co-housing as a vehicle for art. Imagine co-housing as a vehicle for keeping children safe.

My Richmond is an up and coming, sought after, cosmopolitan city! I am in agreement w "phd600", age64 and w "anonymous", 3-24-09, age 47. As a lifetime resident, myself, and retiree, I see the future Richmond so diverse that we aren't just about our great history (as Charleston, SC or Savannah,Ga)! We are MORE! We have great cultural arts to enjoy here! We have simply great geographical features w the mountains, coastline and seasons! Our potential is fantastic for industry to locate here and, with that, prosperity, quality education and so on! We should be investing in awesome planning for our region! We do need coordination in this planning among all counties and cities in the region! But we don't need, and don't have time for, individual agendas and bickering! We are sitting on a gold mine, a jewel and we should recognize this!
We are a very vibrant, young cosmopolitan city!

My Richmond is a good place to live but is less than it could be. "Leaders" act more like administrators -- they talk a good show but never implement real change. I have seen so many long-range plans come to nothing in my 30+ years living in Henrico, Richmond and Chesterfield County.

My Richmond could be a region that works. Works together to create public transportation throughout the metro area. Works together to provide opportunities for all children to visit art museums and participate in music programs. Works together to support families as they deal with eldercare and sandwich-generation issues. My Richmond could be great!

My Richmond is s yo-yo where we let things get 'bad' before doing something. Why? Often, a lack of knowledgable vision where everyone's needs are not at the table, precisely because not everyone is at the table. Example: Now, we are trying to work on getting decent housing for the working poor and the middle class. What about the working class and the lower middle class? What about civil servants? I believe that is called 'workforce housing', but although it has been around for a few years, there still is nothing available. What is up with that, as the kids would say.

My Richmond is a disjointed region on many levels. There is even confusion about who is considered part of the region. (Goochland, Ashland, New Kent, Charles City?)Regional Cooperation between the city and counties works only when the elected leaders don't risk losing their power, position, or money, which isn't very often. The Dillon Rule that keeps Virginia a Commonwealth ensures that cooperation will remain a political battleground. A perfect example is the recent changes in postal addresses to reflect the county of the addressee. If a change needed to be made, it should have been to Richmond, VA to indicate that we are all Richmonders-- Not Henrico, Va or Hanover, VA or Chesterfield,VA.

My Richmond could be a diverse, historical masterpiece of natural beauty, united in the common good for all--a tourist's delight and a resident's dream.

My Richmond is . . . Hard to say. The question asks about my Richmond. It doesn't refer to the Region, so in essence, part of the problem with regionalism lies in this survey. People do not identify enough as a region.

My Richmond could be . . . A lot better than it is.... The counties are extremely well run. The City is not. I could only imagine how much better the Region would be if the City could get itself on par with the Counties. The City needs to take responsibility for its short comings, pull up its britches and get to work. Stop the complaining about the Counties. Richmond's failures are their own. Be a little more humble and ask your counterparts for assistance, don't act like they owe it to you.

My Richmond is Diverse and unequal and separate with few 'tables' at which our different communities within the Greater Richmond Community can come together to listen & learn from each other. Those in power defend their piece of the pie rather than seek to make the pie bigger for the benefit of all. Bigotry remains, no longer out of a false belief in social Darwinism & intrinsic racial inequalities, but out of ignorance and fear. Leaders in Henrico & Chesterfield have been silent, undertaking instead politically expedient practices of perpetuating de facto economic, racial/ethnic and religious segregation. Leaders in Richmond play the role of 'victim' rather than be receptive to shared power among regional constituencies. There are few cooperative ventures to address regional economic development, transportation, education, environmental & quality of life issues. And what do we read in the letters to the editor? Whether or not Robert E Lee was a terrorist! Give me a break. It's the 21st century, people. Get over it and get on with it. There are regions that have been able to address their diversity & disputes through dialogue. When will we stop our polite conversations and get down to making a commitment to work together?

My Richmond is lacking the regional cooperation that it takes to address all the major barriers to us becoming a top tier city. Whether addressing corporate relocations, economic development, tourism, education, affordable housing, regional planning and land use, transportation, or other infrastructure issues the subject needs addressing as a region, not by individual government entities. While metropolitan forms of government are not perfect, they do foster a better sense of cooperation and community pride that drives economic and tourism development.

My Richmond could be better focused on riverfront and downtown development driven by both typical and ecological tourism commerce. There are organizations, corporations and leaders in the community each working on behalf of their own mission/vision but without that champion to pull it together. Shockoe Bottom baseball; no baseball. The river is a gem that could unite but instead seems to divide. North of the river or south of the river, what to do with the river?

My Richmond could be exciting place that attracts visitors to get off the I-95 exits and experience a thriving city! My Richmond has Leaders that can convene a meaningful community dialogue, articulate a common vision and then make something happen. My Richmond embraces people regardless of geography -- north or south of the river --ethnicity, race or age. My Richmond cherishes its history and but does not still live it. My Richmond gets it!

My Richmond is home. It's the place where my friends believe I know everyone. Probably because I've never met a stranger. However, it's also the place where I hear people say we're closed and unwelcoming. It's a place where you have to take initiative to integrate yourself. We're polite, hesitant to hurt people's feelings. Slow to change. Compassionate. A large % of folks are church goers. Artistic. The major downside is we don't appear to be properly educating our children.

My Richmond could be . . . One of the creative meccas of the state, nation, world. With the VCU School of the Arts, the theatre and dance companies, the music scene, not to mention the ad agencies and VCU's Brand Center. My Richmond is . . . Unfocused. There are lots of great things about our region -- the river, new arts center, very active arts scene, fabulous restaurants, Monument Ave. 10k, rich cultural diversity -- and some not-so-great -- gang violence, struggling schools, indifferent sports fans, quarrelsome public officials, unaddressed poverty-related issues. The problem is, we don't have a common self-image. Nashville can say, 'We're the Country Music capital.' St. Louis can claim The Arch. Memphis can say, 'We're the center of the Blues.' Of all the great things about Richmond, which one do we claim?

We need to have prenatal care from the beginning of birth, we need to put more efforts on treating the causes of social issues before going to jail, not after they get in. We need to provide education at its earliest stage for all regardless of what school they attend. We need to recognize that family values start at home. We need to be more proactive than reactive. We need to make sure hard core criminals stay incarcerated so that society will be protected... We need to stress with surrounding counties how important and cost effective Regionalism will make us whole. My Richmond is "home"; however, it has not been an exciting place to return to. The people are too cliquish even in terms of where you worship. We don't support a real jazz venue; we don't support our professional sports teams until it's time for them to leave town; we are still too segregated and isolated economically -- white people are taking over previously black communities (i.e. "Churchill"); new communities are set apart by locale and economics; we just have not learned to live, love and enjoy one another as "people". The "haves" continue to have and the "have-nots" still have not. We get along, but who really cares?!

Richmond is perhaps the most historically rich city in the United States in that its history stretches across all of the major eras of North America development including pre-colonial, colonial, revolutionary, antebellum, Civil War, Reconstruction, industrial, post-industrial, and suburban development.

We have failed miserably to connect all of these eras, however, into one cohesive story that, if told right, would draw Americans by the millions.

My Richmond would tell this most griping story in its entirety.

My Richmond could dive with death-defying, mind-boggling greatness or hit every rock on the way down and end up in a broken heap. I'm betting on the former! I want "my Richmond" to erect a physical structure like a "Facebook" page the size of a city block (or some portion) where we all can put our artistic and written expressions. If "my Richmond" wants to build a new baseball diamond, then "my Richmond" must invest the same amount of capital and resources to build world-class, affordable housing for teachers, nurses, police officers, new workers, non-profit professionals, plant employees, government employees, and service workers, etc. "My Richmond" needs to insist that every public school -- no matter its current zipcode -- will provide an education that is unrivaled because we are a region that wants its "kids" to compete with the best in the world. In "my Richmond, let's take every closed Circuit City building in the metro area and turn it into an educational and learning place for "K through Gray" -- recycle & reuse. I know this requires cold hard cash but, first, "my Richmond" must have the collective will of a community determined to thrive and truly embrace that what happens to others happens to me -- in some way or another.

My Richmond could be an overall better place with a more cohesive plan that allows the Canal area to live up to its once thought of potential. My Richmond is HOME. I know no other place that is better to raise my family, fulfill my career aspirations and be so close to many featured attractions. My Richmond could be more willing to use our history as a tool to heal old wounds, instead of feeling victimized. We need to release ourselves from past historical forces that countinuously haunt our region.

My Richmond is diverse in population and recreational activities. My Richmond could be a city that could do more to enhance cultural diversity and improve on black/white relations.

My Richmond is a city that does not call upon its past or the river that runs through it. My Richmond could a wonderful capital city which utilizes the waterway.

My Richmond is a wonderful place to work, live and to raise a family. My Richmond could be more cosmopolitan with some of the same amenities offered in larger cities (professional sports teams, more top restaurants and shows) and viewed as a vacation spot for people from around the US and around the world.

My Richmond is a beat behind the times. We are waiting for people to come here only to tell them we don't do it that way. As far as the surrounding counties the civil war is over. Most counties around this country live and breath with their cities. Before you know it we are going to be suburbs of NoVA and Tidewater and saying "to ourselves" we don't do it that way.
ps this is the home of the first street car. Get some light rail going. They used to do it that way.

My Richmond is full of flaws, lack of: education, community centers, jobs for felons and those who have been incarcerated so they won't go back to that old life of drugs, stealing, robbing, etc.

My Richmond could be no violence, peaceful people help more on jobs. No more young people playing sports going to college just on TV for being famous.

My Richmond is a good place to live. I feel that there's a lot of talent here and it's not recognized much.

My Richmond could be where tourists would want to visit and more successful people would want to invest in to make the city better.

My Richmond is a place I grew up in with a lot of history. Richmond was the center of the slave trade and has a deep connection to the start of our great country. Richmond has come a long way since the dark days of slavery. Richmond has history, good and bad and has a lot to offer to anyone who chooses to visit or to live here. Richmond is the capital of Virginia and has lived up to that title. Richmond is very vibrant in many different cultures. Which can be seen by all the different festivals we have and I love Richmond and its diversity.

My Richmond could be better if we all came together as a community to celebrate the history of Richmond good and bad. I feel if we come together and celebrate how far we have come we can get past the negative past of our history. As long as we continue to stay in the negative we won't even get to the positive.

My Richmond is my life, my home, born and raised here, Richmond is a very warm city, it's a motherland environment, population satisfaction, very unique in shape form and fashion, historical, I wouldn't leave it. My Richmond has all things available for anyone in education, housing, clothing, rehabilitation and romantic views of parks and the best care of medical assistance, the food is awesome and there are lots of amusement centers.

My Richmond could be my destiny, more secure with law enforcement, more rehabilitation programs for felons, more jobs for felons. My Richmond could have more nursing homes for eleders and homeless. My Richmond could be better if we had a pro football team, more sports events, more fun entertainment in the ghetto areas.

My Richmond is a city of expansion.

My Richmond could be all that it is. A city of progress. Progress is good. Progress helps others as well as a whole community. When I look at the crime rate, progress! When I look at housing, progress! When I even look at employment under the circumstances that the economy is under, I see progress. My Richmond is just what is is, a city of Progress!!

My Richmond is a historical site, a city filled with memories (good and bad). Memories that have made the city a stepping stone for all cultures - no matter what race you are! I was born and raised in historical Churchill. My neighborhood I would say is like an antique store - with its cobble stone roads and old style street lights, even though now-a-days drugs and crime has brought the value of the community down, I still think that its a beautiful place because the people there are starting to weed out the crime and drugs and rebuild the houses. It really is a wonderful site. My Richmond could be a whole lot better if we keep in mind the things our family went through to better our community so that life would be easier for our kids.

There are 3 types of people in the world.

Those that dont know what happened.
Those that want to know what happened.
Those that make things happen.

Could we stop asking and start doing it already! Enuff surveys!

My Richmond is a small town afraid of being a united city, a place where trust occurs in pockets and massive resistance has resulted in passive-aggressive relationships. My Richmond is a place that talks a good game but struggles with collaborative execution. My Richmond is a sleepy town that tosses and turns at night. My Richmond has much potential, but so does most cities our size. My Richmond is a town of chores and when it's over it's time to turn out the lights and wait for another day.

My Richmond could be so much more. But people have got to tell you want they like, rather than focus on what they don't.

My Richmond is a place that wants to realize its own potentials and not attempt to mimic or match itself against Atlanta, Charlotte or you name it.

Richmond could join that great sorority, of Charleston, Savannah and our wounded sister, New Orleans, if we but realized fully what we have here, and also acknowledge the horrendous damage that either lack of planning policies, or outright bad ones, have wrecked substantial and important sections of town.

Richmond's old motto was "Sic Itur Ad Astra." It's from the Aeneid, and translates as "Thus. do we reach the stars." This sounds lofty for Richmond -- but what of it? Through ambitious, visionary plans and actions, Richmond joins a higher realm -- which doesn't mean tall buildings and parking decks.

I'm 48, and a Richmond lifer, 23221.
